Our History

Community Safety Initiative (CSI) is a national Civil Society Organization, operating in Liberia since 2005.

It was founded on March 1, 2005 by the group of Liberian that were living in the refugee camps of Guinea and Sierra Leone because of the Liberian Civil war; that gained wide experiences of humanitarian services, community development and advocacy for women, children, disables and other marginalized groups. CSI envisions that girls and young women are safe from Gender based violence (Child Marriage, Sexual Violence and abuse) to ensure gender equality and enjoy full and equal access to post-primary education and Technical Vocational Education (TVET) for economic empowerment.

CSI, as part of its program focus, is also implementing community health program in Liberia with primary focus on increasing access to and utilization of an improved of a standardized package of essential intervention and including, infection prevention and control.

It has staff across administration, programs, finance, as well as logistics. CSI’s institutional capacity can best be appreciated by taking a look at the scale and size of projects that it has implemented over the past years. This can also be appreciated based on the varying number of reputable institutions that CSI has partnered with.

In partnership with Plan International, CSI is presently implementing 5 years “Girls Advocacy Alliance (GAA)” project that builds civil society capacity to joined hands to fight violation of rights that affect girls and women.

CSI is also currently implementing a 5 years USAID funded project title: Partnership for Advancing Community Based Services (IRC/PACS) with a focus to improve primary health care through household access to integrated community-based health services in Liberia. The project period is from 2015 August to September 30, 2020.

CSI, in collaboration Japanese Grass Root Assistance for Human Security Project (GGHSP), has completed implementing the construction of Youth Development Center in Compound #1 District 1 Grand Bassa County. The one constructed facility contains (training center, Computer lab, two offices, 4 room latrines, cafeteria, kitchen, generator room, hand pump and 150 gallons of poly-tan for water supply) was completed in July 2019. The completed facility is to support CSI skills development and economic empowerment programs for vulnerable youth with emphasis on vulnerable girls, young women, and marginalized groups.

Also, with funding from Plan International, CSI has implemented series of projects including “Rebuilding Culture of Peace, Rebuilding Us,” a cross border Psychosocial Support project that provided support to 1000 severely war affected children and adolescents, “Disaster Risk Reduction, and Safe School Program,” construction of a modern six (6) classroom building including other components, the Universal Birth Registration project, Income Generating Activities for people Living with HIV/AIDS, “Response to Break the Transmission of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) from 2010 to 2014.

When Ebola was defeated in Lofa County, CSI was there, and played a leading role in mobilizing communities to battle the epidemic. CSI in Partnership with YMCA/Mercy Corps implemented six months “Ebola Community Action Platform” that Supported Communities Resilience in the Fight against Ebola in Rural Liberia. From October to November 2015, CSI, in partnership with Search for Common Ground, with support from USAID through IREX, implemented the “Recovery Together Community Forums” project. The objective of the project was to reduce stigma of official and non-official Ebola survivors and their families by providing opportunities to memorialize victims.
