Although many consider access to education a basic human right, education is often out of reach for some children in developing countries. Education plays a significant role not only in children’s development but in building a civil society and promoting long-term changes in our communities as well.
As an organization promoting community safety in Liberia, we will discuss the importance of education:
- Teach values and build a stable life.
While children learn values at home, education helps them learn about other morals and values to have an open and well-balanced mind. By learning values and necessary skills, children in underdeveloped countries like Liberia can secure employment and become financially stable. Youth education is essential to thrive and excel in the world as adults.
- Close the education gender gap.
Increased access to education can help close the education gender gap in the country. In Liberia, 63% of girls between the ages of 15 to 24 are illiterate. Educational programs teach children how to read and write, so they become more confident in their abilities. This fosters self-confidence and critical thinking while creating opportunities for the youth.
- Fulfill basic needs and achieve goals.
When children have an education, they can fulfill their basic needs in life. They learn essential life skills and secure a job to find a place to live. Education also helps children set and accomplish goals which will help them in having a successful adult life.
Community Safety Initiative (CSI) is a community organization in Monrovia, Liberia, that acknowledges the importance of education. Hence, we implemented the Safe School Project, “Disaster Risk Reduction, Safe School Program” in six communities across the Voinjama and Quardu Gboni districts.
