Why Disaster Management Is Crucial in Liberia

why-disaster-management-is-crucial-in-liberia

Climate change is predicted to increase the frequency and severity of extreme weather events like heavy rains and drought in West Africa, putting Liberia in danger from natural disasters.

Disasters can negatively impact people and their properties more than they otherwise would if they did not have well-thought-out emergency response and preparedness strategies.

It doesn’t help that the extreme poverty and reliance on “climate change sensitive” industries like agriculture, fishing, mining, and forestry only exacerbate the country’s vulnerability.

That’s why these occurrences alone threaten urban and rural infrastructure due to severe rains, storm surges, and increased erosion, leading to less community development, damage to agricultural areas, and human casualties.

That’s why developing a better disaster response can be helpful, especially for Liberian communities, as they also increase people’s confidence in their ability to live in communities that are safer and more equipped to deal with risks and disasters.

For instance, spreading awareness about the value of emergency preparation in civil society can inspire locals to be more active and have more medicines they may need during a natural disaster.

The Community Safety Initiative (CSI) has spent a decade promoting community safety in Liberia through development projects, advocacy, and elevating coordinated action with like-minded non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
